Stroke: Signs, Risk Factors, and Prevention

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Without quick treatment, brain cells begin to die, leading to lasting damage, disability, or even death. The good news? Many strokes are preventable, and knowing the warning signs can save lives.

Types of Stroke

1. Ischemic Stroke – Caused by a blood clot blocking blood flow to the brain. This is the most common type, accounting for about 87% of all strokes.

2. Hemorrhagic Stroke – Caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain, leading to bleeding.

3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) – Sometimes called a “mini-stroke,” this is a temporary blockage that causes stroke-like symptoms but resolves within minutes to hours. TIAs are a warning sign of future strokes.

Recognizing the Warning Signs

Use the acronym FAST to remember the most common symptoms:

Face – Drooping or numbness on one side of the face

Arms – Weakness or numbness in one arm

Speech – Slurred speech or difficulty speaking

Time – Call 911 immediately if you notice any of these symptoms

Other possible symptoms include sudden vision changes, dizziness, loss of balance, or severe headache with no known cause.

Risk Factors for Stroke

Some risk factors can’t be changed, such as age and family history. However, many can be managed to lower your risk:

• High blood pressure

• Diabetes

• High cholesterol

• Smoking

• Obesity

• Physical inactivity

• Excessive alcohol use

• Heart disease or irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)

Prevention Strategies

Control blood pressure – Keep it below 120/80 mmHg when possible

Eat a healthy diet – Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins

Exercise regularly – Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week

Quit smoking – Smoking damages blood vessels and raises stroke risk

Limit alcohol – Excess drinking increases blood pressure and risk of hemorrhagic stroke

Manage chronic conditions – Keep diabetes, cholesterol, and heart disease under control
